Review – Annihilation – by Jeff Vandermeer
First in the Southern Reach trilogy.
I read this book.
I have no idea what it was about.
Was it a parable or some sort of metaphor for a life journey, ala the Odyssey or Dante or Pilgrim’s progress cloaked in a bunch of sci-fi words?
Was it a commentary on human existence?
Was it just a bunch of navel gazing to prove that using an unreliable narrator is, in fact, a valid literary approach?
Is it all some sort of fever dream that the main character has?
What is the point? What happened? Why?
I found it incredibly difficult to pick this up and read it through the end.
I guess I’m just not smart enough to appreciate it.
